This series is aimed at helping the busy GP diagnose and manage patients with diabetes and its complications. How would you assess this patient’s glucose metabolism?

    Case history

    Peter has all three of the major risk factors for type 2 diabetes: he is overweight (his body mass index is 26.5 kg/m2), he is aged 47 years and his father and mother both have type 2 diabetes. According to your desktop blood glucose meter, Peter’s blood glucose level is 8.7 mmol/L.
