How a dietitian can make your life easier and improve patient outcomes

Claire Hewat
Abstract
Nutrition intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes. Referring patients to dietitians who are accredited with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) – Accredited Practising Dietitians (ADPs) – ensures a high quality of service that may be rebateable.
Key Points

The recent changes to Medical Benefits Scheme funding for dietetics services mean that a lot more people who need help with their diet can now get it.

The evidence shows that nutrition intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes and is associated with fewer hospital admissions and readmissions, better medical outcomes and improved quality of life. Adding a dietitian to the health care team can, therefore, make a significant difference.
