Dyspareunia: developing a management plan

Elizabeth Farrell
Abstract

Careful assessment is needed to determine the cause or causes of dyspareunia and to develop a management plan. As well as physical treatments, it may be necessary to arrange for psychological counselling or referral to a sexual counsellor or physician for both the woman and her partner.

Key Points

Many women struggle to talk to their doctor about sexual difficulties, in particular dyspareunia. During a women’s health check or at the time of a Pap smear, asking about urogenital symptoms may give the woman an opportunity to discuss these problems.
