Abstract

The GP, as a front-line healthcare worker, will see patients who present with a variety of UV-related ocular conditions. General awareness and understanding will be helpful in providing appropriate counselling and referral, as required.

Article Extract

The human eye is routinely exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), the main source being the sun. There is extensive evidence to support an association between a wide range of eye conditions and either a single acute episode or cumulative UVR exposure.1,2 UVR damage is likely to also reflect occupation and lifestyle choices and the level of care taken over time.2 Despite a range of past research initiatives, our understanding of the pathogenesis of sun-related ocular damage remains minimal at best.3
