Vaccine-preventable disease burden falls

The rate of vaccine preventable disease burden in Australia decreased by 31% between 2005 and 2015, according to a new AIHW report. The Burden of Vaccine Preventable Diseases in Australia found that the most notable decrease in burden was among infants, young children and young adults aged 15 to 24 years, whereas rates of burden among people aged 65 years and over increased. Influenza, pneumococcal disease, HPV, shingles and meningococcal disease accounted for almost 95% of the total burden in 2015. Although the rate of disease burden among Indigenous Australians decreased by 41% between 2005 and 2015, it was four times the rate for non-Indigenous Australians in 2015.
