A violent patient

Gordian Fulde
Abstract
Here is a case study in emergency medicine that is based on a real case. Would you have been able to help this patient?
Key Points

You have noticed how the patient mix has changed over the years in the hospital emergency department where you do regular shifts as an experienced GP. You are also aware that you have become more cautious when confronted by the increasing number of patients, or their relatives or friends, who are verbally or physically threatening to you.

During this shift you are escorting a patient to the x-ray department when you notice a young man pacing up and down the corridor, dressed only in white underpants. Despite the background of partially covered patients – that embarrassing backless hospital gown – you notice him because you sense he is close to being out of control.
