WHO warning on resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae

The bacteria hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae sequence type 23 (hvKp ST23) has been reported in at least one country in all six WHO regions, including Australia, warns the WHO. Resistant to last-line antibiotics, the bacteria can cause severe infections even in healthy individuals. The global assessment risk is moderate, given challenges with surveillance, lack of information on laboratory testing rates and scale of community transmission, and the gap in data on infections, hospitalisation and overall burden of disease.
