Ongoing osteoporosis management: dealing with dilemmas

Jan Vaile
Abstract

Every patient being treated for osteoporosis should be reviewed periodically to ensure that therapy remains appropriate and that all aspects of care have been optimised.

Key Points

Osteoporotic fracture is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the Australian population despite the availability of treatment that is proven to substantially reduce fracture risk. Many of those at risk do not receive appropriate therapy. Nevertheless, there has been a steady rise in the uptake of appropriate therapies and, as people are living longer, issues have arisen about how best to manage those receiving treatment over long periods.
