Global increase in STIs: WHO report

Global HIV, viral hepatitis epidemics and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to pose significant public health challenges, causing 2.5 million deaths yearly, says a new WHO report, Global Health Sector Strategies on HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections, 2022-2030. Four curable STIs (syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis) account for over 1 million infections daily and there was a surge in adult and maternal syphilis and associated congenital syphilis during the COVID19 pandemic and an increase in multiresistant gonorrhoea, the report notes.
