Flu deaths outpace COVID-19 deaths

In August 2025 there were more deaths in Australia from influenza (n = 211) than from COVID-19 (n = 153), Australian Bureau of Statistics data show. Between January and August 2025, deaths involving COVID-19 were lower than in 2023 and 2024, while deaths involving influenza and respiratory syncytial virus were higher.
