Disease burden of dementia

Dementia has overtaken coronary heart disease as the leading cause of disease burden in Australia for people aged 65 years and older, being responsible for almost 230,000 years of healthy life lost in this age group in 2022. This was a 61% increase since 2011, largely due to the high disease burden in women, reports the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in its latest Dementia Australia update. The number of Australians with dementia is expected to more than double to 849,300 in 2058, compared with 401,300 in 2022.
