Population-based melanoma screening
In a new position statement, the Australian College of Dermatologists recommends against population based screening for melanoma because of insufficient evidence showing it reduces mortality. Studies suggest that targeting highrisk groups for screening and surveillance appears most costeffective compared with an untargeted approach, the statement notes, calling for further research in this area. It also recommends investment in programs to improve risk stratification and early detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, including optimal use of new diagnostic technologies.
