Licit and illicit drug use in Australia
Between 2019 and 2022–2023 in Australia, smoking rates declined from 11% to 8.3%, vaping rates increased from 2.5% to 7%, and one in three people drank alcohol in ways that put their health at risk in 2022–2023, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s 2022–2023 National Drug Strategy Household Survey. The survey also found that recent use of many illicit drugs remained stable, but hallucinogen use increased from 1.6% to 2.4% and ketamine from 0.9% to 1.4%.
