TGA safety advisory on Withania

The TGA has issued a safety advisory on medicines and herbal supplements containing the herb Withania somnifera, which can cause acute, severe vomiting and diarrhoea that may be mistaken for infectious gastroenteritis. In very rare cases, these products may also cause liver injury. The TGA advises health professionals to consider whether a complementary medicine could be involved when treating patients with symptoms of liver injury. Use of such products should also be avoided in patients with existing or previous liver pathologies.
