Stoma care

Rae Bourke, Ian P Hayes
Abstract
Stomal therapy (or enterostomal therapy) is a nursing specialty dedicated to the care of patients who require enteral or urinary stomas. It also covers fistula management and specific wound care.
Key Points
    Remember
    • A stoma is not a contraindication to good health, sexual activity, full term pregnancy or raising a family. Nevertheless, some patients will have problems coming to terms with their stoma.
    • Patients need to be able to see the stoma and know how to manage it to achieve independence after their surgery.
    • Modern stoma appliances play a major role in increasing patient confidence by providing reliable pouching systems.
