Dienogest PBS listed for endometriosis
For the first time in 30 years a medication for endometriosis, dienogest, has been listed on the PBS. Dienogest, a daily oral tablet, reduces the production of oestradiol, thereby reducing and suppressing the growth of endometrial tissue. Roughly one in seven Australian women born in 1973 to 1978 were diagnosed with endometriosis by age 44 to 49 years, and there were more than 40,000 endometriosis-related hospital admissions in 2021 to 2022, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data show. Without PBS subsidy, patients would pay around $750 per year for dienogest treatment.
