Feature Article Immunology and allergy

Investigating the atopic child

Billy Tao, Robert J Heddle
Abstract
Each case of allergy should be considered on its merits – not all will need allergy testing. This article discusses the tests available for investigating allergic reactions, and indicates when patients should be referred to allergy or immunology specialists.
Key Points
  • The prevalence of allergic disorders is increasing rapidly.
  • Testing for specific IgE-mediated hypersensivity is indicated in those clinical conditions in which IgE has a role.
  • The skin prick test is the gold standard for assessment of atopic sensitivities.
  • The clinical significance of a positive allergy test result depends on the pretest plausibility of a causative relation.
  • High risk and complex cases merit referral for specialist opinion.
